East Stroudsburg Borough Profile and Brief History

East Stroudsburg is a borough located in Monroe Country, in the state of Pennsylvania. It is a popular destination for many tourists because it belongs to the Poconos region, where several local attractions are offered. The borough was originally called “Dansbury.” However, it was later renamed because of geographic reasons, specifically when the Delaware, Lackwanna, and Western Railroad opened a station in the town.

Lying east of Stroudsburg, it is actually more populous compared to it. As a matter of fact, East Stroudsburg is the largest municipality in the entire Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area based on the U.S. Census of 2010. The same Census Bureau reveals that the borough has a total land area of 2.9 square miles. When you travel west through the Interstate 80, this area will be the second town from the New Jersey – Pennsylvania border on exit 308.

History of the Entire Stroudsburg Community

The area was first settled by white people in the early part of the 1700s. But before that, it was already home to various Native American tribes. The person credited for establishing the very first home in Stroudsburg is Peter LeBar. This happened in 1730. By 1756, Fort Hamilton was built and another person named Jacob Stroud arrived in the area by 1760. He then built Fort Penn which became an important home for many people after the Wyoming Massacre in 1778. He also started selling lots by 1779 and a settlement was eventually built, rightfully naming it “Stroudsburg,” honoring Jacob Stroud.

Meanwhile, Daniel Brodhead arrived in the area of East Stroudsburg in 1737. He established a community he called as “Dansbury.” The said community became a large frontier settlement after just two decades. After Native Indians attacked the home of Daniel Brodhead, they burned down buildings and barns. But eventually, a station was established by the Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western Railroad and the community was later named “East Stroudsburg.”
